WELCOME TO DaNES

Here at DaNES we enjoy exploring the diverse and fascinating world of insects and their non-marine arthropod relatives. It was back in 1914 that our organisation was set up to do just that.

Arthropods, and insects in particular, are the most abundant of all our animals, but many are now at risk and numbers seriously in decline. There is, therefore, no better time to join us in recording, monitoring and learning about them so action can be taken to protect their future.

DaNES has been recording the insect-life of the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire area for well over 100 years. We now have a computerised database, and share our data with various national recording schemes. Keeping records can show changes over time that highlight species or habitats at risk. To help protect these, our information is available to planners, developers and conservation organisations.

Our committee usually meets monthly to deal with the business of the society, and to organise fieldwork and other events both for our members and the public. We produce a quarterly Newsletter and an annual Journal to keep members updated. We are also keen to inspire others to join us and to value and support our insect-life.

We are affiliated to the North Western Naturalists’ Union and to the British Naturalists’ Association. We have been generously assisted over the years, by grants from the National Lottery and Opal, and by the provision of venues for our events and meetings by Derby University, Nottingham Trent University, and Derbyshire County Council. For many years now we have also been registered as a charity, with our activities in entomology benefitting both our environment and all those who share in it.
