Insect Events in Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire

The Society has a number of active members who organise and run events on a regular basis a number of which are listed below.

Additionally individuals or groups of members hold their own recording events and activities throughout the year. Some of these are often on the spur of the moment, or with only a couple of days notice. These event details will not be notified to members but where possible will be advertised on this web site so check this page often.

If you wish to attend an event it is your responsibility to get in contact with the event leader.

Please remember that events are subject to change and are dependant on the weather so it is essential that you check this website often and confirm with the organiser that the event is going ahead, especially if the weather is bad. Also remember to bring suitable footwear, clothing, and equipment (such as torches) to events.

Saturday 1st July 2017. Clumber Park, Sherwood Forest, Notts. Night time insect recording. Meet between 8 and 8:15pm at the X roads on Lime Tree Ave. SK619752. Travelling N on the A614, Lime Tree Ave is on the left, half a mile before the A57 / A1 roundabout. Please email or 07894 987888 to confirm you wish to attend. Moths traps running till early hours weather permitting.

Saturday 15th July 2017. Millers Dale, Nr Buxton, Derbys. Moth recording session. Meeting between 8 and 8:15pm at the old Millers Dale Station Car Park. SK138732. Saturday 22nd July 2017. Shipley Park, Heanor. Night time insect recording. Meeting at the Visitor Centre at 20:00. Light trapping and walks around the Country Park looking for, and identifying nocturnal insects. Contact Darren Clarke at or 07894 987888 for further details. 

Sunday 23rd July 2017. DaNES Summer Exhibition. We will be exhibiting the insects seen and caught last night and will be joined by The Amateur Entomologists Society who will be helping us with an afternoons insect recording. Saturday 29th July 2017. Budby South Forest, nr Budby, Notts. Moth trapping to record species associated with heathland. Traps on from dusk until possibly very late. Meet 6:30pm at Forest Lodge pub on Church St, Edwinstowe, NG21 9QA or at 7:30pm in car pull-in on the B6034 at its junction with the A616. SK627687. Contact Darren Clarke at or 07894 987888

Friday 11th August 2017. Creswell Crags. Moth trapping to record species associated with this north east corner of Derbyshire on the Magnesium Limestone. Meet 9:00pm at the Crags Heritage Centre at SK538743 off the B6042 between Creswell and A60 (the Worksop-Mansfield road). Sunday 20th August 2017. Darley and Nutwood Reserve, Darley Abbey, Derby. Hunting for bush crickets, grasshoppers and other insects. 2pm to 4pm. Meet by the upper South Avenue entrance, opposite Leafenden Close, at 1.45pm. DE22 1FB Expect to find Roesel’s Bush Crickets, Long-winged Coneheads and grasshoppers. Bring a hand lens if you have one, maybe a net; sturdy footwear advisable as the ground can be uneven.
