Insect Events in Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire

The Society has a number of active members who organise and run events on a regular basis a number of which are listed below.

Additionally individuals or groups of members hold their own recording events and activities throughout the year. Some of these are often on the spur of the moment, or with only a couple of days notice. These event details will not be notified to members but where possible will be advertised on this web site so check this page often.

If you wish to attend an event it is your responsibility to get in contact with the event leader.

Please remember that events are subject to change and are dependant on the weather so it is essential that you check this website often and confirm with the organiser that the event is going ahead, especially if the weather is bad. Also remember to bring suitable footwear, clothing, and equipment (such as torches) to events.

2019 Events

New events for 2019 will be added as soon as they are confirmed. Please check this page frequently.

Friday 28th /Saturday 29th June Hardwick Hall Bio Blitz. DaNES are assisting with the Hardwick Estate's first ever 24 hour BioBlitz. Set up will be at 8pm Friday. We will be putting up our gazebo and using it as a base from which to run a series of insect traps on the Friday evening. The following day we will be involved in the finding and identifying of as many insect species as possible. Refreshments will be provided to participating organisations by the National Trust. Friday 26th July Rosliston Forestry Centre, Burton Road, Swadlincote. DE12 8JX. DaNES moth watch as part of the Forestry Centre Nightwatch event. 8pm till late. Contact Dave Budworth at or 01283 215188 for more details.

Sunday 28th July. DaNES Summer Exhibition. 10:30am till 4:30pm.DaNES and members exhibits. We will be showing the insects caught over the last few days and running two insect recording walks around the park. Shipley Park Visitor Centre, Heanor DE75 7GX. Saturday 3rd August Clumber Park, Sherwood Forest, Notts. Night time Insect Recording. Meeting at 8pm, setting up many moth traps moths and running them until early hours. Exact location to be finalised. Please email Darren Clarke at or 07894 987888 for more information.

Saturday 10th August Throstle Nest Fields. Nr Hathersage. Tim Birch of the DWT has invited DaNES to put up some moth traps at his place on the Longshaw Estate. Apparently this will be the first time light traps will have been used in these woods and fields. Meet at The Millstone pub, Sheffield Road, Hathersage S32 1DA at 6pm to make our way to the site a little later. Bring a tent if you wish to stay the night. Saturday 12th October AES Annual Exhibition and Trade Fair. Kempton Park Racecourse, TW16 5AQ.11:00am till 16:30pm. The Exhibition and Trade Fair hosts a mixture of societies' stands and traders selling entomological equipment, livestock, mounted specimens, books and cabinets. A number of society members will be attending this event and it may be possible to share a car. Please contact Dave Budworth or 01283 215188 for more details.

Saturday 9th November 2019 DaNES Exhibition / Insect Show. Nottingham Trent University, Brackenhurst Campus, Southwell. The Society will be holding its exhibition and insect show at Nottingham Trent University , Brackenhurst Campus, Southwell, Notts. The campus is located on the A612. Postcode NG25 0QF. Grid Reference SK 6946 5243. Onsite refreshments will be available. Full details to follow.
